Planning stages...

So, for a very long time I have wanted to move south.  The older I get the more I hate Old Man Winter and I want to run away from it all.  The past couple of years here in Connecticut have been rough. In 2010 we had record snow fall totals and saw the collapse of several building under the weight of the heavy snow. We had a freak snowstorm at the end of October 2011 which knocked out power to parts of our state for over a week.  The winter of 2013 saw Blizzard Nemo (or Charlotte depending on which news station you are watching) where we got 3 feet of snow in less than 24 hours!!  For someone who hates winter, hates the cold, and doesn't ski or do other winter sports, these events, well, for lack of a better term...sucked!

We have been presented with the opportunity of living "rent free" in a house in North Carolina so we are jumping at the opportunity to do so.  My family needs this.  The weather aside, the cost of living in Connecticut is way too high for me and my blue collar family.  This state has some of the highest taxes and gas prices - oh and our "leaders" just passed yet ANOTHER gas tax increase!  Why? Because we miraculously fell out of the top 10 in the nations gas prices for a brief period of time?  I can think of other top ten lists that would be a better goal to get on!  I guess it doesn't matter because none of us can afford cars since we can't find jobs...or afford the outrageous registration fees.

Anyway, I'm ranting now....back to our plan.   We plan to move to North Carolina this coming August. Why in the dead of summer's heat and humidity?  My kids and the school year.  Being moved away from the only home you have ever known, plus family and friends is hard enough and it gets even harder when the school year has already started.  I'd rather them start fresh on the first day like everyone else.

We have started packing and purging. We have lists of things to do and a few decisions left to be made (rent a truck vs. have someone move for us).

I haven't done a move like this since 1993 when I got out of the service and moved back here to CT from Colorado....and even then I moved me and some belongings - not an entire household. This will be an adventure for sure...not to mention seeing how my "Yankee" ways fare below the Mason Dixon line - hence the title of my blog!

Well, I've rambled enough for the first post.....
